Congenital (means: from birth) anomalies of the spine are quite common in India, especially in low socio-economic status and is attributed to poor nutrition. They can involve any part of the spine from cranio-vertebral junction (neck) to lumbo-sacral spine (lower back) and can present at any age. Some examples are meningomyelocoele (MMC), basilar invagination and AAD, scoliosis and spinal tumors (dermoid). I am trained in treating such spinal birth defects and the youngest child treated by me was 34 hrs old. (photograph attached). Other photos are of congenital neck defect which became symptomatic when a patient was a young adult.
